Can you transcribe a video without extracting the audio first?
Yes. Video files carry an audio track, and transcription reads it directly; uploading an MP4 works exactly like uploading an MP3. Extracting audio first is only worth it for huge files: an audio-only export uploads much faster and transcribes identically.
How do I transcribe a video on iPhone?
There's no built-in flow that takes an existing video file, because iPhone dictation and voice-memo transcripts are designed for live speech and new recordings. The practical route: open Trustample in Safari, upload the video from Photos or the Files app, and the transcript appears in the same tab. It works as a normal mobile website, with no app install.
How do I transcribe a video to text on Mac?
Same story: macOS dictation types what you speak into the microphone; it doesn't accept files. Upload the video in your browser instead. If the file is huge, QuickTime's Export As → Audio Only first makes the upload far faster with identical transcription results.
What kind of apps transcribe video to text?

Does video quality matter for transcription?
Only the audio matters. A blurry 480p clip with a close, clear microphone transcribes far better than a 4K production with the mic across the room. Background music and effects under the dialog are the real accuracy killers; clean speech transcribes best.
An honest note: Scripted media (films, trailers, anything with a music bed and sound effects under the dialog) transcribes noticeably worse than plain speech. AI transcription shines on talks, meetings, interviews, lessons and vlogs; it is not a subtitle generator for movies.
