OGG is the format most people meet without knowing it: WhatsApp and Telegram voice messages are OGG files with Opus audio inside, and it's the default for plenty of open-source recorders. Do I need to convert OGG to MP3 first?
No, and converting first costs you quality for nothing. OGG uploads and transcribes directly; re-encoding lossy audio to another lossy format only degrades it. Every guide that tells you to convert first is adding a pointless step.
How do I transcribe a WhatsApp voice message?

Opus or Vorbis: does the codec inside matter?
Both transcribe fine. Opus (the modern codec, used by WhatsApp and Telegram) is actually excellent for speech, because it was designed for it. You don't need to know or check which one your file uses.
Are voice messages private after upload?
Voice messages are private conversations, so the handling is built for that. Uploads are stored encrypted and are never used to train AI models. The audio auto-deletes after 30 days, you can delete any file instantly, and paranoid mode erases the recording the moment the transcript exists, leaving the only copy of the conversation back on your phone.
My file ends in .opus, not .ogg. Is that different?
Same audio, different wrapper habit. Some apps save the Opus stream with a bare .opus extension instead of putting it in an .ogg container, and Telegram exports do this often. Both upload and transcribe identically, so there is nothing to rename or convert.
Can I transcribe a whole thread of voice notes?
Yes, batch them. Export each note, upload them together, and the jobs queue in the background, with each note becoming its own transcript in your dashboard. There is no automatic stitching, so title them by date or sequence and the thread stays readable in order. A week of someone's messages usually takes minutes end to end.
An honest note: A voice note is one side of a conversation. Transcribing a thread of someone's messages gives you their words without yours, and the text messages in between stay in the chat app. For a record of a whole exchange, export and transcribe both sides' notes, then interleave them by timestamp; the transcripts give you the raw material but not the assembly.
